Medical librarianship and informatics collections include institutional archives, the papers of NLM Directors, including NLM founder John Shaw Billings, and records and oral histories of the Medical Library Association (MLA).

Archives and manuscript collections exist throughout the Library of Congress, encompassing a wide variety of material types and subjects. Archival description encompasses the dual processes of cataloging and production of finding aids. The first libraries consisted of archives of the earliest form of writing – the clay tablets in cuneiform script discovered in temple rooms in Sumer, some dating back to BC. About an inch thick, tablets came in various shapes and sizes. Mud-like clay was placed in the wooden frames, and the surface was smoothed for writing and allowed to dry until damp.

As a supplement to the printed guide, a brief overview of the women's collections was prepared, also by Ms. Perrone, which appeared both as a handout and as a (now superceded) web page. Guide to Church Records at the Library & Archives: Manuscripts & Books The Primitive Baptist Church, founded inlocated in Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Church records can be very useful for genealogy researchers as they often contain membership lists, baptism, confirmation, marriage, and burial records.

Current discovery methods for American archival and manuscript (AM) collections rely on four national databases, WorldCat, ArchiveGrid, Archive Finder and SNAC, to which repositories report their holdings in the form of 1) catalog records (similar to library catalog records for books) and 2) finding aids (typically collection summaries and detailed inventories listing the folders in a collection).
